The Dancing Coyotes
A Legend of Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest
Coyote admired the beautiful twinkling stars and loved to dance beneath
them all night long. One evening he spoke to the stars.
“You are so lovely and dance so gracefully in the sky,” he said,
“may I come up and dance with you?”
The stars were happy to have Coyote’s company.
So Coyote shot an arrow high up into the sky until it anchored itself on a
star. He kept shooting arrows until he had made a ladder of arrows so he
could climb up into the sky.
Coyote’s friends wanted to dance with the stars also
so they decided to climb up the ladder, too.
The coyotes danced among the stars all night long.
Whenever a coyote gets tired, he falls back to Earth, creating a bright,
glowing streak in the sky. So when you see a shooting star in the night
sky, know that Coyote is going to rest back down on the Earth.
