U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt laid the cornerstone on April 24, 1903. Inscribed at
the top of the arch are the words: "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People.”
The grand 50 foot tall arch faced toward the train depot so passengers would look up at it upon arrival. Then, at the turn of the century, gas lamps and torches would have cast a supernatural glow upon the arch. And still today, the night sky adds to the majesty of the gateway beckoning visitors to enter what the Northern Pacific Railway’s advertising campaign promoted as, "Wonderland"…
